        Really stupid comic.

Even a 1:1 rip-off is still preferable if it’s FOSS.

Not to mention, we don’t need to re-invent the wheel every time. A photo editor for example doesn’t need to offer innovative new features to differentiate itself from Light Room, it needs to offer the tools generally used by photographers and not be Adobe.

In fact, the more like adobe tools it is, the more likely it is to be adopted by adobe users. One of the most often cited reasons for not switching to linux by individuals (ie not businesses) is “I need Photoshop/clip studio paint/premiere”. Literally those exact tools but FOSS would bring more artists to linux.

moreso trying to underline the potential for stagnation the pinned tools may lead to; many of the would-be pioneers of genuine innovation seem to use extremely bloated and nonFOSS tools

I’d say to jailbreak your early bionics before they firmware upgrade out the exploits, but the risk of bricking your brain is probably a bit worse than a phone.

I’ll still fucking do it out of spite, though.

      bricking

Not sure if that’s a correct term for the brain since it’s not a hard object like a phone, router, etc…

Michael Straight, a former jockey paralyzed from the waist down, was left unable to walk for two months after the company behind his $100,000 exoskeleton refused to fix a battery issue … "I was told they stopped working on any machine that was 5 years or older,”

Corporations lobby to defend their products, so I can imagine people swapping out flesh for artificial parts because you can control your own artificial uterus without permission from the government.

Man, in the eighties, the rapid development of Japan technologically and in corporate culture, we were convinced everyone was going to be working for some branch of Mitsubishi.

It was actually scary how fast they were developing tech, and how fast it was overcoming domestic appliances.

It’s one of those things you kinda had to be there for. Japan used to be practically synonymous with new tech, and now it’s just been baked into the aesthetic of the genre.

It’s because of the crowded neon advertisements and the vertical streets. It plays into the whole fear of the US being taken over by a foreign government, as well. They’re also known for their robotics.
