It isn’t perfect. It doesn’t support spaces well, and sometimes it’s chasing the latest standard, and there’s still a lot of missing stuff with respect to admin features. OTOH, it is incredibly light. I run it on an Atom D2550 alongside ejabbered and lotide, and that box basically idles.
There’s only a few projects I personally donate to.
Matrix synapse and dendrite aren’t great implementations of the protocol so people probably won’t host them, but conduit is 90% of the way there. Another 5% and I bet discords start to drop like flies.
I want mixed reality to be fantastic, but until I see it is fantastic I don’t trust it because the hype has dramatically outpaced the reality.
After my experiences self-hosting, I think every house should have a low electricity server people do most of their stuff from. Not having to ask permission to use your own services is a liberating feeling.
I live somewhere that solar isn’t an option for about 9 months a year, but it would be awfully cool running my hardware using directly collected renewable energy for those 3 months a year!
I’m using nextcloud news. What I like about it is it keeps track of the news I’ve read and not read across all my devices, so I can be assured I’m not seeing the exact same news just because I switch from my phone to my desktop to my laptop.
For podcasts, I don’t like it as much but nextcloud music has become my go-to app.
I’m really a big fan of nextcloud in general. Honestly, it just does so many things very well that I tend to keep just using it for different tasks. Incidentally, another really cool feature is I have an asustor nas, and you can set up nextcloud on it without any extra steps. I didn’t do that because I’m hosting everything myself, but knowing you can have a setup like that is really top notch.
