I think the key here is that it’s a feed managed by the user. There’s not enough commercial potential in that. As a tech company, you want to be the one curating the feed, and you want the user to believe you’re doing it in their best interest so they don’t notice how you’re making money by subtly feeding them ads.
RSS is simply too good for the contemporary internet.
I figured there are interesting people out there who don’t really blog often, but who might post something online a few times ever year and whom I’d like to stay updated on. So I started trying to collect some of these relatively inactive personal feeds.
It’s not ass noisy as following blogs or social media, which is what I like about it. The only drawback is of course that so few people maintain an RSS feed.
A swimsuit is quite common in Norway. Basically you ask yourself the question “am I going to make anyone uncomfortable”. If it’s single gender and people are not extremely shy, you generally go with only a towel, but nobody is really going to care. If you’re a gender mixed group of friends that don’t know each other that well, you might prefer putting on a swimsuit in order to make sure people feel comfortable and included.
From my experience the Swedes are the same.
This is based on private saunas with friends. In public mixed gender saunas I don’t think I’ve seen anyone go naked, but I’m sure certain Finnish tourists would and nobody would mind.
One thing I like about Romania is that it seems to be steadily improving the last 30 years or so. Granted, it had a terrible starting point, and improvements are slow as hell, but whenever I check up on them things never seem to be actively getting much worse.
I don’t think many Italians dream of having a German life as much as they want German wages. You’d have to pry the food, culture and climate out of their cold dead hands.
I guess the French are happy that Macron has given them enough things to be dissatisfied about.
This is such a big factor. Good luck forcing a Finn to complain about literally anything.
Of all the points on which I support children’s rights, their right to own a cell phone is not exactly a priority. I’d say it should be up to the parnts to decide whether their kids should have cell phones - at which point it’s the right of the parents, not the children.
That said I think there might be something broken about how it is solved now - I would probably be in favour of a law banning certain types of software on the phones of children, such as abusive social media or games with microtransactions.
Then take a look at comparative incarceration rates around the world, and ask yourself who these numbers are made up by.
It’s pretty clear who is picking the cotton even today.
I think we just happen to have created a system that favours narcissist man childs. Anyone somewhat decent will net get that rich in the first place.
Unlike the Vatican of course, which has plenty of space ;)
This is largely my experience as well, but when I told someone that I had this impression they looked at me like I was from a different planet.
I think those of us using the Fediverse as our primary social media platform might be a bit sheltered from just how bad it gets elsewhere. Sure, things can run hot here as well - it’s Israel/Palestine after all - but I’ve never seen anything remotely as bad on the Fediverse as what is promoted by the fucking owner of X.
That’s not too say the hateful shit doesn’t exist here - it’s just not actively promoted, which makes all the difference in the world.
I also think Kbin is way ahead of Lemmy in terms of integrating with the Fediverse at large. It’s not perfect for sure, but in my opinion it builds on a better starting point. The real test of Mastodon integration for me will be when Mastodon finally introduces groups - it will be interesting to see how they integrate with communities in the Threadiverse.
I honestly also struggle to get an overview of what’s happening in Lemmy development, to me Kbin seems more transparent. But both platforms are obviously fine, and Lemmy is still more mature for sure.
Since the URL is pretty vital for federation (users from federated instances would follow for example !main@pigedove-lemmy-clone-u9568.vm.elestio.app in order to join a community), it’s probably worth getting the domain up and running before you start federating anyway. Even though it’s a frustrating wait for sure!
I think there’s potential for a bird instance - I’ve heard rumours the birdwatching community is pretty active over at Mastodon.
Wouldn’t even need to open source - they could have joined the fediverse as closed source, offering a platform to those people who are apparently scared away by anything with a permissive license.
Then again, these people are probably more eager to be on bluesky.
Hell - the fediverse has more than 20 000 registered servers.
Push for research outputs can also create perverse incentives for rapid publishing in whatever is considered quality journals - which are usually themselves associated with universities - rather than the pursuit of quality research and academic integrity.
It leads to increased strain on researvhers and a unfruitful obsession with any kind of academic output that can be easily counted. Of course research outputs are inherently important, but the whole academic publishing industry has just gotten weird the last decade or so.

Well, the ones that federate with Meta will still be federated with those who don’t. So it’s really no different from what the Fediverse is already: Fragmented by design.
