  • She posted about this. Basically the party aparatchiks came to her house and told her to stop her “subversive” activities (posting on YouTube, talking about devices useful to protestors, mentioning being a lesbian in public media) or she would not like the consequences. She said she would leave the country entirely, except her romantic partner cannot leave (I assume this is due to political travel restrictions or family reasons).

I think her content was awesome and it showed someone defying expectations of who can do product design, fabrication, electrical engineering, etc.

China should very much get roasted for silencing speech.

  • Not a Boomer, but did get an internship that eventually became a full time job this way, during the post-2008 recession.

I got laid off and wasn’t getting any solid leads from traditional application processes or the town “career center” so I made a list of businesses in walking distance of eachother that might need my services, printed a few dozen copies of my resume, and beat the streets. I just walked in and asked for a manager but settled for whoever would talk to me, gave my brief elevator pitch, left a resume and contact info. A few called me and one actually worked out.

It is very humbling but it can work.

Another important thing to note is that you only benefit from this if you have so many itemized deductions that you can do better than the standard deduction. The mortgage interest alone isn’t going to do that in a vast majority of cases. Since legislation in 2017, a lot of the tax advantage of owning a home was reduced.

The OP is wrong on every conceivable level.

  • I live in suburbia in the US and I can walk to 3 different grocery stores from my house. If I go to the warehouse store, I will drive. Between telework, walking, and avoiding unnecessary trips to various places, I try to drive less than 1 mile per day.

Density kinda sucks to live in, but we can all make more effort to waste less energy.
