Optimistic scenario: 5 years from now (if there isn’t another major breakthrough in AI technology and we can extrapolate from current trends instead), we’ll all have a much clearer understanding of the things AI is useful for and what it’s not very good at; or, what people want it for, and what people don’t want it for. The tech industry will concentrate on marketing the profitable uses. In other words, the magic✨ will wear off, but not homogenously across different use cases.

I think they’ll be on this for a while, since unlike NFTs this is actually useful tech. (Though not in every field yet, certainly.)

There are going to be some sub-fads related to GPUs and AI that the tech industry will jump on next. All this is speculation:

• Floating point operations will be replaced by highly-quantized integer math, which is much faster and more efficient, and almost as accurate. There will be some buzzword like “quantization” that will be thrown out to the general public. Recall “blast processing” for the Sega. It will be the downfall of NVIDIA, and for a few months the reduced power consumption will cause AI companies to clamor over being green.
• (The marketing of) personal AI assistants (to help with everyday tasks, rather than just queries and media generation) will become huge; this scenario predicts 2026 or so.
• You can bet that tech will find ways to deprive us of ownership over our devices and software; hard drives will get smaller to force users to use the cloud more. (This will have another buzzword.)

Sounds like “the purpose of the system is what it does.” Every invention that gets funding does that. I watched the development of ML techniques over the last decade or so; none of the researchers developing AI would have said that was the purpose. They had much loftier hopes for AI.

AI is a tool. Misuse it and it sucks.

It’s a tool for the developer, but a security risk for the user. The web should have had a more restrictive set of a features. This would ensure websites operate more similarly to each other and abuse be less rampant. We should have been very conservative adding features to the web, instead of rapidly embracing new technology for short-term benefit.

I had JS off by default on my smartphone for about three years. The web was a miserable experience, not because of a lack of functionality, but because of broken functionality.

It sounds fascist, especially when you phrase it that way, but it is not. My philosophy is that everyone has a right to live where they are born. Is it fascist to desire anything less than the eradication of Canada? IMO working for realistic, incremental, achievable improvements over the status quo (for instance) is not fascist.

Bro that’s so not the same as fascism. I don’t approve at all of Israel’s actions, I hate Zionism, but I don’t believe it’s a given that Israel must be eradicated. I’m disappointed by AOC’s stance on Israel and Palestine, but I would not say it is fascism at all. If you think that advocating for an “immediate cease-fire and de-escalation” is anything like fascist Zionism then you need a reality check.
