@GrindingGears @remington There are several attempts to get independent of Bluesky PBLLC. There is this initiative to raise money for an independent infrastructure and people are coding new implementations for the infrastructure that are less resource hungry.

@along_the_road @QuantumEyetanglement Bluesky is partially decentralized. You can setup your own PDS (the server where your data is stored). There are two central parts: The directory of all DID (comparable with a DNS) and the message relay.

They have got a repository with their code that is uses MIT as license.

@hedge @moon Bluesky has got only one central component, the directory. The web interface at bsky.app is only one of multiple web interfaces. The data itself is hosted in several distributed personal data servers and you can setup and host your own as well.

This “Bluesky is offline” message is similar to some “Mastodon is offline”, when only mastodon.social is offline and all other servers are running.

@hedge BTW: There is an update to the terms of service as well that implies that you cannot opt out of providing training data to their AI.

@TehPers @Kichae It doesn’t matter where a project is hosted, it matters which group you are targeting and where you personally are located. So even if you would host in Russia, you won’t be safe from prosecution, when you live for example in the US.

@catculation I guess that he was totally happy, when nearly 9,000 workers (out of 12,500) at his factory in Germany voted for a new works council. I’m convinced that he didn’t knew about German labour rights - now he does 😀

@loki @dawnerd Well, since the accounts are now moved to their specific hosts, you can use these hostnames instead of the generic one when using their protocol. The only action where you currently still need the generic bluesky host name (bsky.app) is during some account related activities.

The different hosts already talk to each other using the same protocol that is already in use for third parties who interact with bluesky (like alternate clients or custom feeds). The only thing that currently prevents “real” decentralization is the user registry.

From the outside it appears as if it all was some monolithic block. But this is only the case since the default usernames are using the bsky.social hostname. But in fact you can already use your own hostnames for your account, since the account is not locked to any hostname but to some unique hash. (Which is one of the advantages of their protocol and which we really should implement in the Fediverse as well to perform real account portability)

@loki What do you mean exactly with “other instances” in this context?

@notepass No. In difference to regular scaling you can see the host of your account. These are separate systems that communicate via Bluesky’s protocol and not via the regular scaling mechanisms.
