  • I think the biggest hurdle one needs to overcome is prejudice. “Linux is for nerds”, " Linux is unstable", “Linux is slow”, " Linux is for hackers."

Its all BS. Of course, if you run hype Linux like arch, nix or the like you’ll most likely suffer. But mint or Ubuntu just work.

Blender has always been faster and better on Linux, affinity I don’t know and resolve I think also works well on Linux.

But please don’t believe me. Just get a USB stick, download Linux mint iso and use balena etcher to make a live system. Stick in, reboot, try it non destructively.

  • The amount of time needed and potential for malicious software makes it a nonstarter for business applications.

Of course I’m talking about Linux. Over 100 customers so far have migrated to proper software this year. I earn less because I can’t bill as many hours of support but it’s worth to see customers happy and they bring on new customers due to a good experience.

  • The reason I believe sequels are doing good is:

    1. movie theaters have been perverted into massive and expensive hype fests
    2. in strong opposition, past movie theaters were not expensive to go to and got you entertained in a social setting
    3. due to the rise of large chains, small and cheaper theaters have died out.
    4. assumption: the price to rent a movie for your theater will probably be horrendous by now
    5. sequels have kind of a known quality which lowers the hurdle
    6. that means new movies could be watched in smaller theaters and would have to be sustainable for those

  • I completely agree that everyone should use free software. Not for free of course but by donating or straight up paying for it.

That aside, I think your stance is the „vindictive vegan“ approach. While I‘m a newly found fan of veganism, I strongly dislike the „you’re either with us or against us“ approach.

I personally run a matrix server (which is foss, even if it sounds like its second class foss to you) and have it bridged to discord, whatsapp and signal. Why? Because that helps me convert people.

    Their reasons for joining matrix:

    • You can use one app (fluffychat in my case) instead of four apps
    • People on the other platforms miss out if the bridge goes down which shows them its matrix first. With mautrix bridges, the bridge very rarely goes down btw
    • their chats will be accessible for them forever if they wish, with backups they can take whenever they like
    • no chance the EU breaks their encryption
    • no chance for discord, meta or anyone else to sell their data (of course not in the bridged room)

I think there are better albeit more manipulative ways to get people to convert instead of punching them on the nose. Certain matrix only rooms do help, provided they have no equivalent on the other side.

    Anyway, have a good one.

  • And we have to function within the structure of the system as it exists now in order to improve it.

Not everyone can do that and those who do function in that system dont have that much incentive to improve it.

My personal opinion is that you do your best in life and do the right thing when it doesnt ruin you (i mean ruin literally here).

Most people cant be asked to push a button (again, literally) to help others so the ones that are already on their feet and pushing (not only buttons) for change deserve our gratitude and understanding if they decide they have given enough.
