Many of the chronically online social media poster (read: western professional class) are closer to the CEO than they are to any other group. The temporarily embarrassed millionaires as they’re also known.

Statistically a not insignificant number of them are millionaires by net worth. Especially when we consider demographics where it’s mainly tech workers. But of course that doesn’t count because of some indeterminate line between evil CEO and average Joe who worked hard.

The cognitive dissonance is that they’re all part of the same system. Climbing the same ladder. In any other context these people are bragging about being executive of some random startup or whatever.

    > nobody notices

Kinda wild how the west dissociates from China’s space program basically in a modern day space race against everyone else. Imagine how much farther along humanity would be without the paranoid sinophobia. Some For All Mankind type of shit. Instead we’re getting the Mirror Universe Terran Empire.

  • I think they are absolutely 100% getting kickbacks in some forms. Not necessarily monetary. My basis is that years ago when I was very active in my corners of the internet I got tons of stuff just for knowing the right people. I was far from any sort of power mod. Reddit power mod is much higher profile. So there’s no way they aren’t getting benefits.

Another thing is I’ve been on reddit since early on. I lurked a community that was a few hundred subscribers. Today it is over a hundred thousand. I know the familiar usernames and the little cliques of their inner circles. Over the years there have been a few promotional giveaways on the subreddit. Coincidentally the familiar usernames won the prizes. It was rigged. Had to be.

Maybe most reddit mods work for free. The mod of that random little subreddit? Probably working for free. The power users though? There’s no doubt in my mind they’ve been getting compensations. The power users want reddit to continue succeeding to their benefit (whatever it maybe) as much as reddit needs them to keep working.

  • Very nice. I don’t understand the paradigm where everything is spaced out and there’s useless sidebars wasting space.

I general why does there have to be static sidebars that are rarely used. It causes the content body to be squeezed into tiny space. I will use the left menus when necessary which is not every single page view. In particular the right panel on lemmy and reddit have become cognitive blindspots. I will read the board description and decide to (or not to) click subscribe once. Otherwise it’s like how my brain ignores my own nose.

Why did web design become this way?

  • Am I the only one that’s noticed how reddit has been fucking with web crawlers? They insert newer comments into older posts so the crawlers pick up false results.

A few years back they started injecting a “related posts” box into pages. What that does is multiply the amount of results a crawler will pick up. But all those are false results. There’s only one true search result which is the original comment/post. Some times I find myself sifting though the search engine results to find the actual original post. The rest are completely worthless, off topic, reddit posts littering the search index.

I know all this blackout stuff hurts now. I see it as necessary for the platform to lose its status as the “front page of the internet”. Reddit turned evil a long time ago. It’s long past time it be deposed of.
