  • When quoted in churches, it’s usually quoting from the letter 1 Timothy:

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:3-11 NIV

  • The same regulatory burden falls on small mom and pop locations and makes doing business impossible for anything but billion dollar corps who are only profit-motivated which drives down wages and leads to the current cost of living crisis that most of the west is experiencing.

If you fall down the stairs, that should essentially never be a lawsuit in my opinion unless there was extreme negligence on the part of the property owner. If you burn yourself it should be your fault. All of this unnecessary regulation and liability is what makes everything so unaffordable.

It isn’t only misuse. Sick now means very nice. That didn’t happen because people didn’t understand the meaning of the word sick. Language just changes, and dictionaries acknowledge common use.

Yes, in this case it probably came from generations of people not understanding the difference between a cow and a bull. And most people only see cows irl, not a lot of places have fields full of bulls. I was pretty much raised understanding that “cow” was both a general term and a specific term. No one uses the term bovine in real speech.
