  • Nah, there was just an option to get the Professor’s rating at the computers based on your progress. It’s doesn’t really do anything, and the feature gets removed later on.

In later games you’d want to talk with the professor(s) directly for item rewards, and the little screen certificates you get for a full completed dex have always come from the fourth wall breaking gamefreak employees in the game.

  • In the show it already has most of the data, I don’t think it’s ever elaborated on there either. The pokedex can be used as a trainer id somehow.

In first handful of games it needs to be manually completed. Owning a pokedex is quite rare though so it’s not a crowdsourced task. Not entirely sure why it’s not. It’s made clear that the people with a pokedex at this time are favored by the professors. No connections or fateful encounters, no journey.

During the fifth generation I would say it had changed just based on the atmosphere in the first set of gen 5 games where it’s acknowledged that the professor works with parents to enable their children to go on journeys. In the following two games going on a journey really seems to become a rite of passage, compared to the first four where the player character is very fortunate to have the opportunity.

By generation 8 the pokedex is now a public application that can be put on your phone, meaning it’s probably crowdsourced at that point.

  • It doesn’t really generate activity. Basically any platform would prefer to have more comments to generate activity, which in some cases moves content across various algorithms, but also makes the platform look well active and involved. Having an active looking platform can make others want to sign up and join. I’m sure there’s potentially other reasons.

That said, I think it’s fine to lurk and should be promoted more. Sometimes it’s better to spend time focusing on articulating your thoughts and writing your posts than it is just writing more posts overall, and sometimes there isn’t much to add to a topic.

  • Look, I am a big believer in attempting to educate other people and better the world around you by trying to change harmful or hateful outlooks, but I also realize that some people cannot be changed. Trying to engage these types of people in real life is just putting yourself in danger. Engaging them online is fine but there’s a limit to how long you should spend having dialogue with someone who could probably argue their irrational viewpoints for weeks on end without stopping.

  • It’s much easier for people to mock and ridicule than to educate and correct.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t call out poor behavior but the way we do so should be constructive as to not breed further resentment. This goes for most everything too, not just for the issue in the OP.

This is just a small part of creating a world that you want to live in. We can’t shut out the world or those we disapprove of, but we can contribute to the betterment of others, making the world a place we’re more more comfortable with sharing.

  • The problem isn’t necessarily multiplayer games as much as many multiplayer games refuse to release with functions to help you group/party find and actually meet people in-game. They don’t have to because discord exists.

So you go to play a new game and turns out you’re just playing with the same people you always play games with because despite being multiplayer there’s no reason to interact with strangers in-game.
