I remember, in my younger, conservative years, becoming terrified about how I didn’t like lesbian porn as much as stereotypical guys. I was worried I might be gay since I preferred porn with a guy in it.

So in college, being open-minded and experimental (probably why I’m now far from my conservative roots), one day I tried to jerk off to gay porn.

I learned then 1: there’s nothing scary about gay porn, and 2: gay porn isn’t a turn-on for me.

Oh and 3: a culture that makes someone worried about their sexuality because they like straight porn is really fucked up and needs to chill.

That’s me. Sort of. Don’t get me wrong, my wife is rapidly running out of room in her office for all the cute animals I have printed for her (that she didn’t ask for, I just surprise her with them sometimes 😅).

But I’ve rapidly reached the stage where I want to print but have covered most of my own needs for printed stuff. So any time anyone asks if I can print something, I’m thrilled.

Just goes to show what an amazing evolutionary advantage we get from the combo of intelligence and dexterity. The ability to make and use tools to fit any situation makes us capable of anything other animals can do and more.

Having a sensor means you can also trust your popcorn button. Technology Connections did a great video about this, if your microwave uses the sensor properly, the popcorn button starts by clearing the chamber of moisture by running the fan and the sensor. Then it turns on the microwave element, and when the bag inflates enough to open there’s a sudden puff of moisture into the chamber. The oven detects this, and uses a lookup to determine how much longer to run the microwave element based on how long it ran the element before sensing moisture, which accounts for different sizes and weights. You’ll hear a beep and see a few seconds left on the display.

This is nearly perfect in my experience. Every now and then the popcorn is very slightly burnt, but being able to just press a button and walk away is awesome.

Definitely watch the video, I didn’t realize mine had this feature until an earlier video of his about popcorn buttons (this one, specifically).

I believe the only two full-body spinners still in Battlebots are Captain Shrederator and Gigabyte. Neither are particularly successful.

But you’re not wrong, I’m constantly shocked that Captain Shrederator keeps coming back for more punishment. There was talk of it retiring after the last season, but reportedly it’s being redesigned instead. Gigabyte theoretically has a leg up on Captain Shrederator because of the self-righter, but it also doesn’t seem to do very well.

The basic design problems are pretty tough to overcome. Similar issues are faced by other horizontal spinners like Tombstone, where if you can get them hitting a wall or the floor, they’ll bounce around potentially destroying themselves. Tombstone has seen more success though, because it’s hardier and can drive upside-down (and because that giant spinning bar is painful).

How would a modern bot beat the blendo?

Full-body spinners do exist in Battlebots. But the competition in Battlebots far exceeds what existed in Robot Wars. The sport has evolved a lot. Also the power and weight limits are higher. Teams can afford to run heavier armor, and full-body spinners need to push lots of power to deal with that armor, but all of that power makes them just as likely to damage themselves by running into a wall.

A few examples of full-body spinners being their own worst enemies:

Captain Shrederator vs Riptide

Gigabyte vs Copperhead

Captain Shrederator vs Rotator

Captain Shrederator vs Huge (This one shows well how an unbalanced spinner is really hard to control. It manages to get air all by itself at one point.)

If a full-body spinner becomes unbalanced (like when part of its weapon breaks off) it becomes very difficult to control. And even when they’re controllable, they’re carrying an enormous amount of kinetic energy that isn’t contained very well, so often the best strategy against a full-body spinner is just to point your armor at them and let them destroy themselves.

It’s kind of sad, because they have a neat history in the sport, but these days everyone has a solid strategy to handle them, and you can’t change much on them to deal with different styles of bots.

I don’t think we’ll see many full-body spinners going forward.

In modern Battlebots, it would be practically useless. Full-body spinners have so many drawbacks, and even when they do manage to land good hits they’re just as likely to hurt themselves.

Blendo was amazing at the time, but the meta has evolved so much since then.

Hey, totally fair. I was looking at the CORE One, looks like an awesome printer! And a buddy of mine has a Voron he loves.

I’m not overly concerned, I’m not enough of a hobbyist to bother with alternate slicers or firmware or anything like that yet. Maybe someday I’ll get there. For now I’m just going to be thrilled to have an enclosed multi-material printer for under a grand. 😅

Had an Ender before and hated it.

I had a Maker Select Plus (i3 clone) and it was great…but extremely limited. I’m really looking forward to what I can do with an enclosed printer that doesn’t sling the bed around for the Y axis.

Some guy was printing a life sized T-Rex and his recommendation is what pushed me over the edge. Haven’t regretted it.

Damn. Lots of printing in pieces and then acetone fusing to get the parts together? Or glue? Sounds like an awesome project.

Thankfully now there’s MagSafe charging so that frees up the lightning/usb-c for wired headphones

Shhh, you have to call it “qi2 charging” or you’ll be sent to the Apple User gulag. We need to pretend that qi2 isn’t directly based on MagSafe.

Everyone hates BambuLab now right? Something about firmware blocking other slicers? Seems shitty if true.

I actually appreciate this, even knowing how it works. After a big purchase I tend to be conflicted about it having spent that much money. I like to have it be confirmed that I made the right choice, even if I know it’s just manipulation. 😅

Like, recently I bought a BambuLab P1S 3D printer (with the multi-material combo). I did my research, knew it was an excellent value for money. I knew the competing options were not worth the added features for the higher cost, or the reduction in features for the savings. It was basically exactly what I wanted at a good price point.

And yet every time I see a suggested YouTube video recommending that printer, or an ad talking about what a good value it is, I get this little happy dopamine burst for having made a good choice.
