  • This is a misinterpretation of a study on peasant life. It called certain religious days “holidays”. What it meant was those days were days they didn’t have to work for their lord. Peasants were obligated to work a certain number of days per year on the lord’s land. The other days they still had to work their own land. Agriculture was back breaking work and if you weren’t working in the fields you were constantly working on things like making cloth, repairing things, preparing food, etc.

  • Your brain deliberately forgets trivial stuff. Do you really need to remember every lunch you had? Same goes for all the mundane stuff in history.

On the other hand so little of the mundane stuff was recorded that when we do see it it can be a window into how people actually lived, like Samuel Pepys diary. The daily stuff was so accepted as boring and common knowledge that it wasn’t considered worth recording.

  • I’ve thought about that. Games, especially ones with development like RPGs, provide that sense of accomplishment that life rarely gives or doesn’t give clearly. Promotions at work might be years apart, buying a house, etc but I can feel like I got something done on a daily basis in games, plus I get a little chime sound and a popup when I do!
