This genere, the “descent into madness” plot, is usually what’s defined as a cautionary tale. To be effective in it’s goal the protagonist is usually written as a character to which the reader can only partially identify, at worst, or who’s seen by the reader as “not me”. Some examples of such characters can be Don Quijote, Orlando, Achilles and so on. The non identifiability is a fundamental element for the reader to focus on what’s wrong in the protagonist’s way of behaving and to learn to avoid such behaviors himself.

In this framework both movies fail that part of the audience that identify with the protagonists.

If you don’t identify with both protagonists I think they are pretty good movies.

Our Italian working class is too busy fighting each other as a consequence of mass privatizations and liberal propaganda which caused an empoverishment in regulations and wages. Our governments have been pushed towards this system for decades and these are the consequences. We have a metric ton of NGOs and associations that help migrants, and they are regularly underfunded or criminalized by centrists or right wingers. The same political parties that profit from this mess are the ones that sometimes slow down maritime rescues, cut the budgets of our control apparatus and police forces. The EU uses us to deny the rights of these people and we get only shit in exchange. We are tired.
