  • The part about EXIF data is true, but they’re very upfront about this, and they have a sticky post informing people about this and instructing them how to remove the EXIF data themselves. My take is that it’s just a limitation of the site design, it’s good that they inform people upfront, and removing EXIF data a useful thing for people to learn how to do regardless.

As far as privacy is concerned, I’d say that yeah – they’re very pro-privacy. You can still connect with people, though. I’ve met some people on raddle who I’ve actually chatted with off site. So I wouldn’t say it’s anything more than the privacy culture here.

The one thing that sometimes turns people away from raddle is that people on the site tend to have very well-read and carefully formed opinions, and they can sometimes come off as being aggressive and confrontative. But even the people who may come across like that at first are actually very empathetic, once you spend more time there and observe how they interact.

I’ll just say this: I’ve personally not seen anything on raddle that would turn me away from using the site, and I’ve been there off and on since leaving reddit in June.

  • This is in Minnesota. When I was a kid, I begged my parents to drive to see it. They rented a room at some motel in Bemidji and made a weekend of it. The highlight of my trip was seeing the huge Paul Bunyan and Babe statues.

I thought they were so great and it was like they came to life out of a book, but now that I see them again… holy shit lmao

  • Same! If you think of it, please let me know 🙏

Whatever it is, it’s pretty common to the point that I can predict the entire conversation:

Me: [Posts links to numerous transphobic tweets by Rowling].

Them: That’s not transphobic, she’s just saying [superficial bad-faith reading of the tweet in question and a statement about transgender people being “too sensitive”]

If there’s not a term for this, someone needs to coin one lol

I used to engage, but I’ve learned from my tenure on reddit to recognize the pattern and that there’s no point

  • This is the same thing as people who claim Trump’s not racist. It’s so patently absurd to claim that you can’t see evidence of her transphobia even when it’s right in front of you that people are left dumbfounded. It’s so obvious you’re not saying this is earnest.

Someone help me out, isn’t there a name for this technique? It’s not “gish gallop” because it’s not an endless stream of out-of-pocket claims, but rather one claim that’s so colossally batshit that it can’t be addressed. It’s like someone saying, “No one’s produced evidence of humans requiring oxygen to live.” It’s a way to successfully dodge an issue because of the absurdity of the claim being made. Is it called “red herring”?

  • My heros will only ever possibly be my neighbors wherever I live.

That’s what I’m always saying! I know so many good working class folks in my friend group and neighborhood. I don’t feel compelled to look up to some celebrity who’s ultimately a complete rando to me.

There are artists and other famous people whose work I respect and admire, but my heros are people I know irl

  • I feel quite the opposite. Reddit is populated predominantly by far right-wingers masquerading as libertarians. Things like racism, sexism, LGBTphobia, and xenophobia run rampant on the default subs. Every single thread on r/all is filled with them, and if you report them, you’re likely to catch a ban for “abusing the report button.” I actually got an IP ban for reporting a threat against trans people. Then there are the status quo warriors who fantasize about meting out violence against anyone who doesn’t fit the norm. Then there are the pedos, pedos everywhere.

Most of the so-called “leftist” subreddits are actually right-wing neoliberal subs, r/SubredditDrama or r/AgainstHateSubreddits, for example. These are not leftists or post-leftist, but system-defending pro-state pro-hierarchical neolibs. It would take a true fascist to call these people “leftist.”

    And the admins are Nazis.

I like it here because it’s more moderate. Sure, there are some awful neoliberal mods on lemmy.world, but most of the users there seem alright. I’ve never felt like I’d be banned as an anarchist or for saying things like “punch Nazis” or “punch transphobes” like I was on that other hellsite. This place is much more welcoming.
