No, they’re hardcore because tiling WMs are hardcore. Most users don’t want to use them, they don’t care. And they wouldn’t be significantly more likely to use them if more distros had them as a default.

Y’all complain that users still occasionally need to use the terminal for certain tasks on Linux, but you think those same users will be totally interested in spending hours writing Perl or JSON configs and memorizing dozens of keyboard shortcuts for every function they used to use the mouse for??

First, the article reads like an AI wrote it, but assuming that’s not true, the Linux space absolutely does NOT need more tiling window managers.

Quite frankly, I’m amazed there are still as many actively developed ones as there are.

The VAST majority of Linux users have little to no interest in a tiling WMs, and the basic tiling features of Plasma, Gnome, and soon Cosmic are fine for most of the users that want to try it out. The few that really want hardcore full tiling are almost always already very experienced power users who know what they want and how to get it. They aren’t going to be put off by their favorite distro not having built in support for tiling WMs.

In fact, most of them are already using distros that are able to be heavily customized to their liking, like Arch, NixOS, and Gentoo.

How many users do you think want to run Linux Mint or PopOS but with some hardcore tiling WM?

Linux has a massive amount of variety in all areas, it’s already hellish for new users to pick a distro from the forest of suggestions, do we really need even more tiling WMs on tip of the dozen+ ones that already exist and serve a tiny percentage of Linux users?

Steam, because most my games are on there.

Discord, because most my friends and social groups are on there.

Both are good, but different focuses. OnlyOffice has fewer features, but extremely good MS Office cross-compatibility.

Libre Office has more features, but can run into compatibility issues when going back and forth between MS Office.

That being said, for the average user’s needs, both are perfectly fine.

OnlyOffice is also able to be used in a cloud framework similar to Google docs, but to my knowledge Libre Office cannot do that.

Hmm interesting, I would have thought digital forensics would be a space that lots of FOSS would exist in.

For me, it’s Discord and Steam. There are some good alternatives for Steam in the sense of being a game launcher, but not with all the modding and friend join features, which I use quite a lot.

Discord is worse for me though, because Valve is a least a FOSS friendly company, but Discord isn’t the same. all my friends and family are on Discord and have no interest in leaving. There aren’t any FOSS alternatives that have all the core features that Discord has and work well.

And contrary to a lot of FOSS enthusiasts, I actually really like Discord, it works well most of the time for me.

Steam and Discord. They are the only non-foss apps that I use basically every single day. I’m trying to wean myself off Discord specifically, but I have so many communities on there that aren’t on FOSS alternatives, and the FOSS alternatives like Matrix chat and such just don’t cut it for me yet.

Plus literally all my friends I game with and chat with are on Discord and almost none of them are even slightly interested in migrating anywhere else.
