Ironically, older federated messaging systems like XMPP might be better by coincidence. Message archiving was an optional addition and some servers, such as the popular Riseup one, do not implement it.

It may not be spyware in the traditional sense, but they’ve already handed over data to the Indian government, left a telephone number scraping vulnerability open for the Iranian government, and gotten caught with “the most backdoor looking bug” with their unwisely handmade encryption algorithm.

Because the default message form is not encrypted. In order to switch to E2EE you basically shout to Facebook, “hey I’m going to start talking to this person right here, right now, and I don’t want you to know what I’m saying!”
Facebook Messenger only uses it for specially marked chats AFAIK, and to initialize one you need to specifically request it. Nothing puts up a red flag like initializing one. Source (Facebook warning)
It’s important for people to form their beliefs in more than just opposition to a thing. It’s totally reasonable that living through an abusive, repressive society (of any stripe) will create incredibly negative opinions towards it, but the wrong groups can abuse that opposition to inject some harmful beliefs in addition.
And it cuts both ways. Fear of Communism in the '50s and '60s was used to condemn racial integration, for example.
All those points are about how one server communicates with itself. Federation doesn’t factor into it
