This isn’t the first time they’ve had an ad supported Office for free. Anyone remember Office 2010 Starter, that shipped with only Word and Excel and also had a permanent ad banner.

For me, my default browser is LibreWolf with several privacy hardening extensions, but if I do come across a website that fails, my usual route goes LibreWolf > Firefox > Ungoogled Chromium

If it doesn’t work beyond that then I just won’t use the website.

I still have a early 2000s (I think that’s the era anyway) LaserJet 2200dn and it’s done nothing of that sort, even on my spare actual Windows XP laptop. Insanity that their more consumer brand printers had those problems by '07

I’m not 100% in the loop on things they’ve done, but I think the main thing is that there are better alternatives out there such as Signal for keeping in touch with friends and family, but oftentimes those friends/family just don’t want to have yet another messaging app so it leaves you needing Discord to keep in touch.

Just from my observations from owning a 2015 MBP with 8GB of memory, it is easy to be fooled into thinking memory management is much better on macOS because you can effectively have more open than you would on an equivalent Windows laptop with 8GB memory.

From what I understand though, the SSD is used to compensate as swap a lot more than Windows, and I believe this is causing a lot of ewaste with the M1 Macs in particular being effectively binned because the SSDs are worn out on them from swapping and they’re soldered.

My sister found that it outright blocks her. She is signed in.

I’m in the same boat whether on Windows, macOS, Linux or Android. But my sister, in the same household, also using uBO on FF, has been getting the message constantly

I’ll second the other comment suggesting KeePass, but the biggest issue I had with it was syncing the database across devices. Ultimately I stored it in OneDrive, but it occurred to me that at that point it wasn’t much different to a cloud password manager, which I especially didn’t trust.

I now self host a Vaultwarden instance from my Raspberry Pi, and that works perfectly for me, but it does require a bit of Linux experience and a spare device to run the server.

Yeah, it would be a fantastic thing if it showed a permanent history of parts and their serials in the settings, as well as a date on which the change was noticed, so you have an idea of the history of the phone and what’s been replaced. And, of course, not locking you out of features.

I don’t know how old your Mac was, but I think system info does record battery details. If not a serial, it definitely reads the cycle count, so it may have been possible to cross reference that if you knew the cycle count previously, but of course, I don’t blame you for not making backups of all that information and cross referencing it, you should never need to do that in the first place.

Edge has some genuinely nice features, like vertical tabs and split window browsing.

But I wouldn’t suggest either personally, especially in the context of all the crap going on with Chrome. I imagine anything Chrome implements will be immediately back ported to Edge, such as WEI etc. I can’t see why MS wouldn’t.

It’s just so dystopian almost, that these things that are objectively bad are named things that sound good, like Enhanced Safe Browsing, Topics API, Web Environment Integrity, etc

So I’ve only somewhat recently got into the Apple ecosystem, but I can tell you that once a macOS version loses support it’s technically on death row but nowhere near as dramatic as you mention.

I recently daily drove a Mac running macOS Catalina (2019) and I was surprised that it still ran everything I needed for my IT degree (Zoom, Office 365 suite, VSCode, Signal, Tailscale, etc.) and the only real issue I noticed was Apple’s Xcode not being compatible.

I also own a Mac mini 2012 with i5/8GB, and while I don’t use it often, my parents daily drive that as a smart TV and web browsing machine with no real issues at all. The last official version of macOS on it was Catalina, but I used community patches to push it up to Monterey (2021) and it’s totally fine.

I think when you own and actually use a Mac, you will find in its own way, that they do last longer than Windows equivalents. I have a 2012 Latitude with i5/8GB and yes I could run the latest Win10 natively (but not Win11 without hacks) but I don’t think it exactly cuts the mustard anymore, and I think most people who would use it would generally agree. Given its age I would just Linux it up if I wanted to daily drive it.

This is just in my limited experience, I work as a tech for an MSP and I’ve generally seen HPs fail more so than other brands (not by a wide margin but I wouldn’t buy a HP).

The other device we see fail more is Microsoft Surfaces, especially the tablets. I love the form factor and what Microsoft goes for with them but I’d never buy one purely on the reliability concerns I have, and (with a couple of exceptions) terrible repairability.

Are homicides up in the rest of the developed world among youths? I feel that here in Australia, while we have our own fair share of domestic issues, it doesn’t seem anywhere near as widespread that Aussie youths murders/homicides are higher than say, 10 or 20 years ago.

I don’t have any sources for that, I am writing this up five minutes before I go to sleep, but I think it’s a potential talking point, and if data does corroborate with my hunches on this, maybe it’s not the social media alone and maybe something USA does differently? Maybe the lax gun control?

Easier to manage for IT would certainly be my bet, and appealing cheap contracts. Even those Acer Aspires so many schools used were double the price of these Chromebooks, so suddenly youre talking about nearly halving a ~$100k cost. Schools want things locked down and enslaved, they couldn’t care less that they are Linux under the hood. They don’t think like you and I.

I want to abandon the shit platform but its just so nice like in my lunch breaks at work or just after work, whack on some YouTube, and I can watch gaming, I can watch tech, I can watch really niche tech, I can watch people fixing cars, I can watch an Aussie dude fuck around with his nuggets, like these people are genuinely interesting and make genuinely good content, but there’s no decentralized or otherwise separate YouTube-like platform they upload to elsewhere.

Sure, Nebula has thought provoking videos, Floatplane has a few, Odysee has a few more but there’ll be that niche YouTuber who does videos on vintage Macs that I’m in the mood for, and back onto YouTube I go.

It’s scarily difficult to get off it. I want to, and maybe I will if things get so shit it’s borderline unusable, but I think Google knows how to boil the frog and unfortunately that’s the reality of it all.

I envy you not having YouTube as something you don’t use often. YouTube was genuinely at least a decent platform over 10 years ago when I joined it, and I’ve been hooked on it since, every single shit change they make.

I can’t follow this logic of Reddit’s. Ohh, a community hasn’t been reviewed to ensure it’s safe? Oh, a community is NSFW? Gee golly, if you’re on a mobile phone you’ll have to use our app to look at it! We can’t have that open to the internet (unless you’re on desktop then you’re all good, until we make an official desktop app)
