I have nothing good to say about the Académie, but, to be fair, “mél” is meant as abbreviation. Like, for business cards or email signatures, where stuff like “Tél.” was written. Still ridiculously bad.

That’s the case in many places around the world. From your “We need”, I’m assuming you’re in the USA?
I think it’s okay, I would have voted against it, but they really need to be careful with their website design.
