Exactly. This is the good thing about federation. If you don’t like the community you’re in, move to another one that better aligns to your values. No one’s speech is “limited”, but other instances aren’t forced to listen to you unless they want to.
I’ve said for years that the very last power we have as consumers is the ability to turn off our internet and still be able to use our devices. That is my minimum expectation of any company.

The ability to unplug my ethernet cable and still be able to use 99% of my computer with the exception of email and a web browser is the absolutely most basic human right left to us.
I’ll usually tell him that the sound isn’t working when I open it in the browser and I’m not downloading the app. But he keeps… on… trying…

I actually think conceptually “Pebble” is a great name for a social media site if you lean into the “drop a pebble in a pond and it ripples outward = even the smallest person can reach a large group of people with their message.”
At least it MEANS something, unlike whatever “X” is supposed to represent (a name so bad, it’s STILL usually followed by “formerly Twitter” whenever it’s mentioned by anyone)

I didn’t have one on reddit. I don’t see the need to have one here. As someone else already mentioned, I barely pay attention to usernames, let alone profile pics. I care about what you’re saying. Not what you or your profile look like.

But where I see a small nugget of good intent in this law is in the fact that I’d be willing to wager a very large percentage of people read the blurb on Facebook, which summarizes the entire story, and never click over to the actual article, thereby robbing the news site of ad revenue.
This isn’t (supposed to) be about paying to post links. It’s about paying to summarize their content so that users don’t have to leave Facebook.
I pay for adguard DNS. Rather than use an app on individual devices, I just put the official DNS into my router and problem solved when I’m at home. Works like a charm.
COVID.
COVID changed everything. In an attempt to recover quickly, companies ramped up their abuses to new levels. While billionaires defending them all had their masks removed as the world collectively realized that it’s impossible to make a billion without exploring others.
Toss in back to the office mandates and rising costs while those same companies post record profits…all while the population is Uber sensitive to that kind of thing, and we’re in the middle of a not so quiet proletariat revolution.
Thanks to COVID a lot of people realized that despite the elites best efforts, the enemy isn’t left or right, it’s us versus the super rich. And it’s having a trickle down effect.
That’s not how Open Source works. Is this Chinese version of the AI likely biased? Yes…almost certainly.
But Open Source means that anyone can download and use the same source code and same technology to tinker with it and create one that isn’t biased and has nothing to do with the Chinese government.
The power of Open Source is that regardless of who creates the software originally, a million eyes are literally looking at the code. It’s nearly impossible to hide any shenanigans.
