  • I love that Eratosthenes was able to estimate the circumference of the earth with the amount of math we had in his era. Meanwhile, modern flat-earthers are still making me want to vomit.

I used to see fractals in the shadows on LSD. I couldn’t think of the word “fractal,” and told my friend, “You know, that thing in math?” And he said to me, “When you trip you see math?!” Fun times. To be a teen again.

  • You need three copies of your data: the working copy, the nightly backup, and the offsite backup in case of natural disaster. I physically mailed a drive to my father in another state in case my building catches fire. You can also use a safe deposit box or give a drive to a friend who is geologically separated from your location.

Notice: recent info suggests that SSDs suffer bit-rot when not powered. Not enough confirmed info at this time for me to go into it further, but please rewrite important data from time to time.

Yep. Knowing what the solution is only compounds the guilt for not doing it. Let me ignore it by focusing on other things just a little bit longer.

Side note: I’m most productive when I’m about to hit a deadline. I hate that about myself. I’m always relieved if / when it doesn’t blow up in my face. Had two of those in the past two weeks. Both looked like they were gonna be disasters when I was cranking them out. In both cases. the disaster was averted. Holy shit.

  • My bad. I mostly don’t read fiction, but I did enjoy The Girl with all the Gifts. Also, Oil, by Upton Sinclair. American Psycho was the most disturbing fiction I’ve read, truly hard to get through at times. Plus Brave New World, 1984, Animal Farm. Starship Troopers was good. Some people think it advocates fascism. I think it just uses fascism as a plot device. Make up your own mind.

I already try to consciously not click YouTube links in my primary browser to avoid this. I load them in a backup browser with no privacy tools or, much more often, download them directly for local viewing. Fuck Google and their ads.

  • The End of Policing. Basically shows how every topic it touches would be better served by social welfare programs. Also demonstrates how much money is wasted by the current approach to addressing the topics. Spoiler: advocates socialism. I bought this book for multiple people because I found it so compelling.

After the Fact: The Truth About Fake News. Argues that we have a fake democracy.

The Jakarta Method. Shows how Indonesia, and other countries, were prepared to rise to the world stage before being cut off at the knees by capitalists. The phrase “third world,” meant third round of ascension (USA, Soviets, now their turn), not “backward.” But we sabotaged them and prevented their assent.

A People’s History of the United States. This is well-known enough that I won’t elaborate.

These are off the top of my head. If I was at home, I’d scan my bookshelves for more recommendations. Maybe I’ll see this post later when I’m there and update my comment. Happy reading!

You know what? Lemme give you a fun one: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Cheers.
