They were still selling into the 30s, marketed primarily towards women (“less maintenance, no gasoline needed”, etc). The Depression really killed off the environment that allowed many people to own multiple cars, and those little electric city cars were the first to go because you needed something that was big and could actually carry your kids and your dog and your belongings and whatever else.

The multibillion dollar company I work for hosts literally everything on Teams and OneDrive. We absolutely have the capacity for storage on-site, we absolutely have the capacity to spin up our own cloud. They just do it this way because “well it’s already there”.

Cedar waxwings do something similar - their favorite food is juniper berries, and usually by the time they’re migrating and need to eat a lot, those juniper berries are fermenting on the bush or have dropped off. I’ve seen bunches of these idiots just rolling around too drunk to fly.

  • So to expand on these, because a lot of people seem to think “it’s because they cared”, that’s only partially it.

Back before faster travel methods, if you wanted a small bird for any reason and it had to travel any significant distance, you would assume at least a 75% fatality rate from stress, with that increasing to roughly 90% over greater distances.

So canaries and finches were expensive, and unless your mine was close to a port city, you’d be traveling 3-4 days at least. Need 4 canaries? Better buy 40.
