Lately, I find weather maddening. It’s either a non-issue mid-season light sweater weather, extremely consistent across all movies and films ever made, unless it’s a monsoon like downpour -but everyone is immediately dry unless it’s a plot point. Rarely, it snows, a snows that never settles, never gives any problems, never freezes anyone’s hands.

Our society (with US at the forefront) is built on contradictions. On one hand, capitalism says you don’t deserve anything, you have to earn it. On the other hand, consumerism says you deserve every new gadget, luxury, treat.

I believe both are false: everyone deserves a reasonable standard of living (UBI?), nobody inherently deserves more than that but it should be possible to earn it. And we should acknowledge that earning something is not a matter of moral superiority, but a combination of some effort and some luck.

I’m not huge on baking. Had to swap out some milk in a savoury carrot cake recipe and was fully expecting the whole thing to implode.

In particular if you look at the long term (even just a couple of years): many homeless just need a little help to start climbing the ladder again. So housing and mental care would allow them to quickly become productive members of society. Prisons just lock them into a circle of poverty.

With on one hand the polarization of discourse and on the other the decay of democratic standards in the US, it is normal to have higher levels of interest across communities that are not US centered but only US influenced.

They will, at best, replicate the data sets. They will learn racial discrimination and propagate it.

If you have a deterministic system, for example, to rate a CV, you can ensure that no obvious negative racial bias is included. If instead you have a LLM (or other AI) there is no supervision on which data element is used and how. The only thing we can check is if the predictions match the (potentially racist) data.

Inherent bias is going to get worse and worse if we let AI roam free.
